Abstract Over time, postmitotic cells accumulate a non-degradable intralysosomal substance, lipofuscin, which forms due to iron-catalyzed oxidation/polymerization of protein and lipid residues. Lipofuscin is often considered a hallmark of aging, showing an accumulation rate that inversely correlates with longevity. There is an emerging impression that lipofuscin, although still typically considered a harmless wear-and-tear product,

Purpose: Chronic diseases can develop through metabolic disturbances in trace elements and vitamins, and be maintained by environmental toxins. In order to gain more insight into these complex interactions and evaluate therapeutic regimens, we collected and analysed blood and urine from patients.

Design: Laboratory- and clinical-based survey.

Materials and Methods: Serum samples were obtained at the beginning of and during from 489 patients (17-86 years;

Hearing deficits are a frequent consequence of both developmental and adult methyl mercury exposure in humans. However, a detailed characterization of these deficits has not been performed in either humans or animals. Cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) were dosed from birth to 7 years of age with 50 μg/kg/day of mercury as methyl mercuric chloride. Steady-state blood mercury levels during dosing were 0.6-0.9 ppm.

Cisplatin [cis-diamminechloroplatinum(II)] has proved itself as a potent antineoplastic agent. However, nephrotoxicity, neurotoxicity, gastrointestinal toxicity, myelosuppression, and ototoxicity interfere with its therapeutical efficacy. Forced diuresis reduces nephrotoxicity, effectively leaving neurotoxicity and ototoxicity as the major side effects of concern, and gastrointestinal toxicity and myelosuppression as the secondary side effects.

So far, attempts to reduce these side effects by developing equally potent platinum analogs have been unsuccessful.

Metals differ from most synthetic organic chemicals in that their clinical manifestations are well known and methods for their measurement in the body are generally well established. Since metals are ubiquitous, special care should be taken to identify the source, whether dump site or not. Isotopic ratios may be used for lead. Time of exposure may be highly variable so estimates will be necessary of integrated "dose-commitment."

Objectives: Analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) is useful for measuring cardiovascular autonomic function. The effects of blood metals on cardiovascular autonomic function have not been studied extensively. The objective of the present study was to determine the association between the concentrations of blood metals, including toxic and essential trace elements, and cardiovascular autonomic function,

Epidemiologic studies have shown the health risks of exposure to cigarette smoke and air pollution, with heavy metal composition implicated as contributing to both. Environmental exposure to cigarette smoke has been epidemiologically associated with pancreatic cancer, but the pathophysiologic basis for this is not yet clear. In the current work, we have used inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to quantify the metal composition of pancreatic juice collected in response to secretin stimulation in successive patients evaluated for abdominal pain (35 with pancreatic cancer,

Abstract  Cleanup goals for the contaminated sites are established on the basis of risk assessments and rely on the estimated toxicity of the chemicals of concern (COC). Toxicity estimates are based on bioavailability causing risk of adverse health effects on humans. In this study, bioavailability of As, Cu, Pb and Zn in soil was determined by SBET (Simple Bioavailability Extraction Test),

Abstract We have employed an estrogen receptor dependent transcriptional expression assay and E-Screen assay systems to evaluate the estrogenicity of various heavy metals and their species. Using the former, the following estrogenicity ranking was measured: bis(tri-n-butyltin)>cadmium chloride>antimony chloride>barium CHLORIDE=chromium chloride>lithium hydroxide>sodium SELENATE=lead acetate>stannous chloride. Using the latter, the following estrogenicity ranking was measured: bis(tri-n-butyltin)>cadmium chloride>antimony chloride>lithium hydroxide>barium chloride>sodium selenate>chromium chloride.
