Researchers conclude that magnesium supplementation may reduce blood pressure (BP), based on results from a meta-analysis involving 22 trials with 23 sets of data (n=1173). The doses ranged from 120-973 mg elemental magnesium, with 3 to 24 weeks of follow-up. Primary outcome measures were systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) at the end of the follow-up period. Not all individual trials showed significance in BP reduction, but combining all trials did show a decrease. The authors concluded that magnesium supplementation may achieve a reduction in BP.
