A recent study done at the division of endocrinology and metabolism at Johns Hopkins University school of medicine describes that isoflavone may be a viable alternative to taking estrogen for menopausal women. This was a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial in women with average age of 56 years. Participants were given 160 mg of isoflavones for a period of 12 weeks. At this time there was significant improvement in all menopause specific quality-of-life subscales. These include physical, sexual, vasomotor, and psychosexual categories. Those individuals that took placebo had no benefit whatsoever. Those individuals with the best results were those who had recently begun menopause.
I think that the natural soy isoflavones are certainly beneficial to help reduce symptoms caused by menopause. I have recommended the use of these substances for years.
Of course besides simple nutrient recommendations such as this, I always recommend a comprehensive medical nutritional evaluation. It is important to test for vitamins, minerals, hormones and digestive ability.
