The latest research published in the New England Journal of Medicine describes that Biphosphonates like Fosamax are associated with an increased risk of esophageal cancer and osteonecrosis. These medications are widely used to attempt to stabilize own in cases of osteoporosis or osteopenia.

Studies were performed in the United States Europe and Japan and multiple medications in this class are shown to increase this type of cancer and bone destruction.

In an excellent study done at the Queensland Institute of medical research in Australia, low selenium levels were linked with an increased risk of basal and squamous cell carcinoma.  The study involved over 485 Australian adults and those individuals that have the highest levels of selenium in the serum had the lowest association with skin cancers. 

A study published on April 16, 2009 in the American Journal of epidemiology describes that magnesium deficiency is linked to increased risk of ischemic stroke.  This research involved over 14,200 men and women between the ages of 45 to 64 years.  The follow-up was carried out over 15 years.  The lower the levels of magnesium the higher the risk of stroke as well as correlation with hypertension and diabetes.
